Professor Pierre Failler from the Centre for Blue Governance at the University of Portsmouth discusses the cutting-edge trends and challenges of blue carbon

On June 4, 2025, Professor Pierre Failler from the Centre for Blue Governance at the University of Portsmouth engaged in academic exchanges with Professor Shaoqing Chen’s research group, delivering a presentation titled "Frontier Trends and Challenges in Blue Carbon: International Perspectives and Governance Pathways." The presentation was chaired by Professor Shaoqing Chen, Vice Dean of the Institute of Carbon Neutrality and Green Development at Sun Yat-sen University.
Professor Failler highlighted that, against the backdrop of global climate governance and sustainable development, blue carbon, as a key nature-based solution, is receiving increasingly widespread attention. He systematically elaborated on the critical roles of typical blue carbon ecosystems—such as mangroves, seagrass beds, and salt marshes—in carbon sequestration, biodiversity conservation, and enhancing coastal resilience. He also pointed out the core challenges currently facing blue carbon development, including inconsistent measurement and monitoring standards, high costs of ecological restoration, and underdeveloped market-based financing mechanisms.
